- Abstract
- Reducing people’s trust in misinformation and mitigating its detrimental effects are pressing priorities in contemporary information governance. Elucidating the antecedents and consequences of misinformation credibility is crucial for formulating precise governance strategies. This research aims to provide a comprehensive meta-analytic investigation of misinformation credibility's antecedents and consequences. A meta-analytic review is employed to bridge the gap in understanding misinformation credibility. 24 independent studies are synthesized to identify potential variables. The analysis unveiled 8 antecedents specifically content credibility (k = 5, r = 0.203), source credibility (k = 7, r = 0.307), social endorsement (k = 4, r = 0.241) that exert a significantly positive influence on false information credibility. Furthermore, one consequence "sharing intention" were identified as being positively and significantly affected by misinformation credibility (k = 7, r = 0.237). Subgroup analyses were conducted, revealing that the associations between determinant factors and false information credibility are moderated by economic development level and misinformation nature.
