- Abstract
- The Yin-Yang symbol, embodying equilibrium between the dark (Yin) and bright (Yang), finds a tangible reflection in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) image. The image captures a steel gasket post-Diamond Anvil Cell (DAC) experiment, where the sample (dark) and pressure calibrant KBr powder (white) form a circular shape at the center. The DAC is a tool used for simulating extreme pressure conditions by compressing materials between two diamonds to investigate their high-pressure properties. The pressure inside the sealed gasket chamber is assessed by monitoring the fluorescence of the pressure calibrant, in our case, KBr powder. Success in a DAC experiment, therefore, hinges on delicate equilibrium; the pressure calibrant should be sufficient to be visible under the fluorescence microscope, while allowing space for the sample. Achieving a perfect balance between the two components is paramount, particularly at high pressures, as the packed powders are prone to cracking and shifting within the gasket chamber. Only when this intricate balance is reached can the experiment be conducted safely and successfully in the face of extremely high pressures.
