- Abstract
- As an international student, do you remember the first thing you did when you arrived in the United States? It might have started with a search on a map: finding your apartment, dining in a restaurant, stepping into classrooms... We are balancing the nostalgia of home with the enjoyment of immersing ourselves in a local culture, we are seamlessly switching between our native languages and English —— We survived, and thrived. We are the courageous explorers of our own stories! My research delves into this vibrant tapestry of experiences, focusing on the identity construction and translanguaging practices of transnational graduate students in the U.S. These bilingual students often find themselves in a delicate balance – being integral, yet feeling marginalized. This study seeks to dig into the linguistic challenges and cultural adaptations they navigate, exploring how translanguaging ideology can support their academic and social development. The image shows a 'Real-Time Location Sharing' on an online map, where a Chinese student, displaying the nation flag as her profile picture, shares her location at UIUC with friends. Blending two languages is also a powerful celebration of linguistic diversity and a testament to the unique journey of transnational students.
