Abstract
Several issues regarding the credit for the invention of improved the gas blow pipe between Hare and Clarke are discussed. The controversy involves charges of plagiarism and intellectual dishonesty. Hare can be faulted concerning the concept of heat but not his basic chem. insight, which Clarke lacked. The relative ease of using the Clarke blowpipe and the contributions stemming from its use in chem. and mineralogy redeemed his scandalous disregard and diminution of the work of Hare. He deserves credit for the design of his blowpipe.
