Abstract
The anal. work of Francis Home and Joseph Black, Scottish chemists during the second half of the 18th century, is discussed. The efforts of these two scientists are examd. to understand and det. the strength of alk. salts at a time when quant. anal. measurement was beginning to be made recognizable by present day chemists. The anal. methods and chem. thinking of Francis Home and Joseph Black were adequate for the needs of the early alkali trade and the use of these alk. materials in bleaching.
