Abstract
This dissertation investigates global citizenship education in North Central and Central Appalachia by examining the state standards used in high school science and social studies classes of the state of West Virginia. It has three research questions. First, what kind of citizen does the high school social studies and science standards used in West Virginia seek to create? Second, what kinds of political and economic ideologies are represented in the standards used? Finally, do the standards used reflect concepts found in global citizenship education? The study uses Critical Discourse Analysis following the framework of Mullet (2018), the methods of Gee (2011, 2014b), and employs concept coding. The study found that the standards used in West Virginia reflect traditional liberalism and classical republicanism with an emphasis on learning how to effectively contribute to a capitalist society upholding what is considered to be traditional American values as determined by the state.
