Abstract
The life of James Bryant Conant and his scientific career is traced. James Bryant Conant's career as a research chemist lasted only from 1919-1933. He was instrumental in the development of American phys. org. chem., making contributions in such diverse fields as superacidity, the quant. measurement of very weak acidity, the theory of nonaq. solns., kinetic vs. thermodn. control of reactions, free radicals, reaction mechanisms, and effect of high pressure on org. reactions. His pioneering work in the biochem. area involving Hb and chlorophyll showed that an important function of org. chem. in the future would lie in its application in the biochem. arena.
