Abstract
The challenges that British women faced in gaining acceptance by the professional societies, esp. the Chem. Society, are described. Particularly interesting is the involvement of a core of active women whose later careers differed but who shared common bonds of education at a surprisingly small no. of institutions, specifically KEVI High School, Newnham College, Royal Holloway College, and the University of Bristol.
