Abstract
The events leading up to the discovery of lipid-bound phosphorus in the brain and some other tissue are traced. The story unfolds through the work of six chemists, spanning more than a century, the first of whom was Johann Thomas Hensing. The other chemists are Antoine-Francois Fourcroy, Johann Ludwig Jordan, Nicolas-Louis Vauquelin, Jean-Pierre Couerbe, and Theodore-Nicolas Gobley.
