The life and scientific accomplishments of Karl Elbs is traced. Karl Elbs was not in the first-rank of chemists of all time, but he was among those at the top of his profession in his own time. He was best known in his own time as one of the founders of quant. electrochem. Elbs was the author of one of the first compendia summarizing methods for the prepn. of org. compds., a small, very popular book on storage batteries, and a text book detailing lab. methods for various electrolytic prepns.
