Abstract
Throughout the 18th century, the watercolor portrait miniature was held in high esteem as a depiction of intimate human relationships. These limnings' (from the Latin luminare, meaning to give light) as they were known were commissioned and painted as documents of introduction between people, cherished personal mementoes, or memorials. This paper will limn' the lives of those females - students, acquaintances, friends and family - whom Joseph Priestley held in high regard and treated as rational beings, and illuminate their public and personal relationships.
