Polemic History Phlogiston Theory Electron Transfer Voltage
Abstract
A polemic in response to Habashi (Bull. Hist. Chem. 2006, 31(1), 31) is presented. Woodstock believe that the idea of identifying phlogiston with the electron is both novel and interesting. The connection between phlogiston and the electrons transferred is: phlogiston = no. of electrons x Faraday const. x EMF. It is clear that all chem. reactions involving, for example, the transfer of one electron have a widely varying amts. of phlogiston, depending on the EMF, which is proportional to the phlogiston content. This highlights the limitation of the phlogiston = electron transferred idea by Habashi.
