Abstract
The author examines different genres of scientific biog.: the inevitable process by which biog. brings together the lives of the biog. subject, the author, and the reader; and the diversity of audiences for which biogs. may aim. In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Dexter and Edelstein Awards for Outstanding Achievement in the History of Chem., the article provides emphasis on the role that biog. has played in the history of chem., esp. as practiced by the chemists and historians who have received the Dexter and Edelstein prizes.
