Abstract
An account of the life and scientific accomplishments of Theodor von Grotthuss. Grotthuss presented an electrolysis concept based on phys.-chem. phenomena rather than on the prevailing established electrostatic interpretation of the galvanic process. He perceived the battery not only as a galvanic generator but also as a polarized system composed of particles of opposing elec. nature. This study laid out new directions for the interpretation of galvanic phenomena.
