Abstract
The article discusses the discovery, announcement of and naming of americium, its characteristics, isotopes, applications [including in smoke detectors], use as a portable gamma ray source, and as a fuel for spacecraft will be described. The chem. of americium and also work being done to reduce the radio-toxicity of the waste from the reprocessing of used nuclear fuel will also be noted.
