A review discusses new details about the invention of European porcelain via examg. the plausibility of an early 19th-century account in the light of recent anal. data together with archival material. Johann Friedrich Bottger, an alchemist, in pursuit of the philosopher's stone, together with Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus and their circle of lab. assistants and kiln builders, who succeeded in reinventing porcelain in Europe.
