History lithium cisplatin diketopiperazine serendipitous discovery medicine
Abstract
Three examples of serendipitous discovery, which include the treatment of mania with lithium; discovery of cisplatin (II) as in situ drug from platinum electrode; the discovery of heterocycles (bis-diketopiperazines) from EDTA as new drug for treating cancer. The common occurrence of serendipity in medicine, which is still underpinned in chem., is highlighted. Lithium and cisplatin (II) are inorg. compds., whereas a bis-diketopiperazine is an org. compds. that was prepd. by chem. synthesis.
