Two short biogs. of Aleksandr Mikhailovich Zaitsev (1841-1910) and Vladimir Vasil'evich Markovnikov (1838-1904) are presented. The article traces the life and scientific career of Aleksandr Mikhailovich Zaitsef and Vladimir Vasil'evich Markovinikov. The two Russian chemists are most widely known in the field of empirical rules for predicting outcomes of org. reactions.
