Abstract
An utterly simple glassware tool for chemists, the Dean-Stark trap as it became known, was devised in 1920. This paper strives to elicit the multiple meanings carried by this little device, with widespread and continued use in the chem. lab. It also describes the milieu of American chem. between the two World Wars in which the original paper by Drs. Dean and Stark appeared.
