Aurum fulminans is a highly unstable compd. that is recorded on numerous occasions as having caused substantial phys. damage and even a few casualties. Could such a material have found any use in the decorative arts of the 17th and 18th centuries. In this article, we shall present archival evidence showing that aurum fulminans was indeed commonly used by jewelers and enamelers.
