Abstract
This article will explore the construction of the dual identities of radium, simultaneously an isotope and a mineral, and how each affected the path of early American nuclear culture. The connotations of power and progress bound up in the framing of refined radium element as a story of modern super-science provoked attention from lay audiences, while the availability and practical uses suggested by the mineral construction of radium sustained that attention.
