Abstract
Contrary to most accounts, exptl. chem. was a key part of the education of girls at private British girls' schools in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Here, we report detailed evidence on the teaching of practical chem. on the basis of archival searches at many of these schools. In particular, we have found photog. evidence of numerous school chem. labs. and we have contextualized the lab. experience of the times.
