- Abstract
- Participation in sports can improve physical health and also benefit adolescents' mental health by enhancing both mental and physical self-esteem (Kim & Ahn, 2021) and building resilience in the face of adverse circumstances (Murphy et al., 2022). Team sports, in particular, are associated with positive outcomes such as behavioral guidance, understanding of role identities (i.e., positions within a social structure with reciprocal obligations), and improved communication skills (Eather et al., 2023).Conversely, research highlights the mental health drawbacks of not participating in sports. Chi and Wang (2022) found that individuals with lower frequencies of sports participation were more likely to report higher levels of depressive symptoms (see also Vella et al., 2015). Moreover, adolescent girls are generally less likely to participate in sports than adolescent boys (Guddal et al., 2019), leading to an unequal distribution of the benefits of sports across genders. The purpose of this study is to explore what motivates people to participate in sports as a way to improve their physical, mental, or other health-related issues. The study will examine why some individuals choose sports as a hobby or a therapeutic activity.
