- Abstract
- A play on Michelangelo's "The Creation of Adam," our image reflects the simple mechanical beauty of the human body while pointing us toward the "unlimbited" future of prosthetics. Building on the work of the worldwide volunteer organization e-NABLE, we aim to make functional prosthetics accessible to individuals with a wide range of limb differences. The Unlimbited Phoenix Hand, shown here, is a mechanical prosthetic that enables individuals to grasp objects by leveraging wrist movement. Our work aims to apply fundamental engineering concepts to enhance prosthesis functionality while keeping costs low. By integrating electronic components into our prostheses, we hope to provide highly functional, personalized hands to individuals who may not otherwise have access to them. The panels in our image reflect the infinite options available for tailoring the look and function of each hand to the user’s preferences. We hope to inspire further innovation, using our prosthetics to attract newcomers to the amazing world of science and engineering.
