Abstract
Lowell Liebermann stands out as one of the most successful living American composers today, with his extensive repertoire regularly performed, describing his remarkable talent. My thesis contributes to his growing popularity by focusing specifically on his two-piano compositions. This study delves into the pianistic value of Liebermann’s piano ensemble pieces.
An overview of Liebermann’s biographical background and compositional style is followed by a stylistic analysis with practice suggestions of three two-piano pieces: Variations
on a Theme by Mozart for Two Pianos Op.42 (1993), Three Lullabies for Two Pianos Op. 76 (2001), and Sonata for Two Pianos Op. 117 (2012). My analysis aims to identifying technical challenges based on stylistic analysis and to provide practice instruction.
I hope that this thesis will serve as a source of inspiration for fellow musicians, encouraging them to engage in an in-depth exploration of Lowell Liebermann’s two-piano
compositions. It aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of Liebermann’s compositional style and foster insightful interpretations of their performance.
