- Abstract
- The Spring/Summer 2002 issue of AEMS News and Reviews (Vol. 5, No. 3) offers diverse film and media reviews exploring cultural identity, music, politics, and intercultural exchange across Asia and Asian America. Featured works include "Jazz in Japan", which examines the unique evolution of jazz in Japanese culture and its role as a cultural tie between the U.S. and Japan. "Being Hmong Means Being Free" focuses on Hmong identity and diaspora experiences, documenting their history, traditions, and challenges as immigrants to the United States. "The Turandot Project" chronicles the East-West collaboration behind Puccini’s opera staged in China, revealing cultural assumptions and clashes during its production. The issue also reviews "Helen Foster Snow: Witness to Revolution", a documentary on the American journalist’s coverage of China’s Communist revolution, and "No Silence in this Court", which concerns a successful alternative legal justice system in South Asia. "StarFestival", a CD-ROM-based multimedia curriculum unit, explores Japanese cultural celebrations and identity. "The Fourth Dimension" delves into cultural perception and space, examining the importance of ritual to identity in contemporary Japan. Additionally, the issue spotlights "The National Clearinghouse for U.S.–Japan Studies", providing educational information about Japan for K-12 audiences, and highlights budget-friendly Asian American educational resources covering immigration, discrimination, and success.
