- Abstract
- The Fall 2002 issue of AEMS News and Reviews (Vol. 6, No. 1) serves as a vital resource for educators and students, highlighting significant Asian cinema to explore diverse cultural, social, and cinematic traditions across the continent. This issue extensively reviews films by renowned directors such as Japan's Takeshi Kitano, featuring "Hana-Bi" (1997) and "Kikujiro" (1999) which offer glimpses into Japanese originality, vision, and themes of life, death, violence, and father-child relationships beyond stereotypes. It also examines "HHH: A Portrait of Hou Hsiao-Hsien" (1996), a documentary by Olivier Assayas that delves into the Taiwanese director's life, work, and the development of Taiwanese cinema. Other featured films include the poignant Chinese film "King of Masks" (1996), which addresses gender roles, tradition, and filial piety, and "Chunhyang" (2000), a Korean retelling of a famous folk tale about love, virtue, and triumph over feudal class structure, incorporating the operatic form of p'ansori. The Chinese narrative "Shower" (2000) explores generational and societal change through a father-son relationship and the confrontation between traditional Chinese and modern Western influences. Additionally, the issue reviews "The Cup" (1999), set in a Tibetan monastery in exile offering insights into monastic life, "Lagaan" (2001), an Indian historical sports drama with powerful postcolonial themes of resistance to British colonialism, and "The Circle" (2000), an Iranian film that insightfully addresses women's oppression and social control within Tehran.
