Abstract

The Spring/Summer 2004 issue of AEMS News and Reviews (Vol. 7, No. 2) highlights the intersections of culture, tradition, and modernity across Asia. Featured films and videos explore diverse topics including the musical legacy and history of the Sidi community in "From Africa to India: Sidi Music in the Indian Ocean Diaspora", and the experiences of a young Chinese Go-Go dancer in Beijing in "Night Girl". Korean wedding customs as seen through evolving photography styles are examined in "Wedding Through Camera Eyes: A Trilogy of Wedding Photography in Korea", while the "Follow Jade!" series offers engaging introductions to everyday life and Mandarin Chinese for younger audiences in China. "Friends in High Places" sheds light on the social and political survival strategies of spirit mediums in contemporary Burma (Myanmar). The issue also features a special spotlight on the Japanese Feature Film Clips Project, which supports educators in teaching Japanese language and culture through cinema.
