Abstract

The Fall 2004 issue of AEMS News and Reviews (Vol. 7, No. 3) presents a wide range of films that explore political history, cultural transformation, and artistic heritage across Asia. "Morning Sun" critically reflects on China’s Cultural Revolution through archival footage and personal stories. "Robert Fortune: A Tea Thief" dramatizes the 19th-century British botanist’s mission to smuggle tea plants out of China, revealing early examples of industrial espionage. "Children of the Seven-Headed Snake: The Sacred Waters of Cambodia" delves into the ecology, social, spiritual, and economic practices tied to the Tonle Sap River in contemporary Cambodia. In "The Wild East: Portrait of an Urban Nomad," the film follows two young Mongolian men navigating urban life, ethnic identity, and a rapidly modernizing society. "At Home with Master Musicians of Madras: Volume 1, T.N. Krishnan" documents the life and performance of one of India’s most respected classical violinists. An “In Focus” feature highlights Columbia University’s Asia for Educators Online, a digital resource designed to integrate Asian studies into the curriculum for undergraduate and pre-college levels.
