Abstract

The Fall 2006 issue of AEMS News and Reviews (Vol. 9, No. 2) highlights films exploring war, justice, and women's roles in modern Asian societies. "Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War" provides a gripping and emotional portrayal of two brothers torn apart by the Korean War (1950–1953), offering a fresh look at the war from a Korean perspective and shedding light on national trauma and personal sacrifice. "Deacon of Death: Looking for Justice in Today’s Cambodia" investigates post-Khmer Rouge Cambodia through the lens of Sok Chea, a woman's pursuit of justice against a low- or mid-ranking former Khmer Rouge village leader, Mr. Karoby, offering a powerful reflection on memory, accountability, and reconciliation. "For a Place Under the Heavens" examines the contested place of women in Islamic society through the issue of the hijab in contemporary Pakistan, blending personal and political narratives by juxtaposing secular and religious viewpoints. "Silent Waters (Khamosh Pani)", a Pakistani film, addresses the impact of the 1947 Partition and rising religious extremism on women's lives, centered on a mother-son relationship in a Punjabi village. The issue also features a review of Taiwan’s Online Multimedia Gallery, promoting understanding of Taiwanese culture and history, and includes a brief discussion on copyright issues as they pertain to digital media for libraries in the United States.
