Abstract

The Winter 2006 issue of AEMS News and Reviews (Vol. 8, No. 3) presents a collection of film reviews that delve into themes of cross-cultural interaction, personal identity, and global events across Asia. "A Dream in Hanoi" captures the intricate dynamics of a binational and bilingual production of "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" in Vietnam involving American and Vietnamese theater groups, showcasing the challenges and triumphs of cultural collaboration. "The Year of the Yao" follows Chinese basketball star Yao Ming's first NBA season in the United States, detailing his adjustment to American life and the development of an international friendship. "Rice Rhapsody", a Singaporean film, explores a mother's evolving understanding of family, tradition, and sexuality through the lens of her three sons and the complexities of multiculturalism in contemporary Asian society, featuring a transnational cast from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, and France. "The Tale of the Mandarin Ducks", based on an old Japanese folk-tale, is an animated story that imparts lessons on integrity, perseverance, and kindness.
