- Abstract
- This issue of AEMS News and Reviews explores contrasting national narratives through two powerful documentaries. "Burma VJ: Reporting from a Closed Country" captures the raw bravery of undercover journalists documenting the 2007 protests in Burma (Myanmar), as Buddhist monks and civilians risk their lives to oppose the military regime. The film is a gripping testament to citizen journalism and resistance under authoritarianism. In contrast, "Japanland" offers a year-long personal exploration of Japan through the lens of Karin Muller, an American filmmaker immersed in Japanese language and culture. Structured in 24 short thematic segments, the film presents insights into Japan’s urban life, religious customs, and folk traditions, making it a valuable classroom tool and a reflective cultural journey. Together, the films offer compelling perspectives on how individuals experience and interpret life under very different societal systems.
