- Abstract
- This issue of AEMS News and Reviews explores gender, tradition, and spirituality in contemporary East Asia through two distinctive documentaries. "The Fall of Womenland" offers an intimate, visually rich portrait of the Moso people in Yunnan, China, a society known for its matrilineal traditions. Directed by Xiaodan He, herself of Naxi heritage, the film critiques romanticized portrayals of Moso culture while highlighting the pressures of modernity and cultural preservation. In contrast, "Shugendō Now" immerses viewers in the world of Japanese spiritual asceticism. Filmmakers Jean-Marc Abela and Mark McGuire accompany urban pilgrims ascending Mt. Ōmine under the guidance of Tanaka Riten, shedding light on the evolving practice of Shugendō and its balance between ancient ritual and modern spiritual search. Together, these films interrogate the continuity and adaptation of traditional lifeways in an era of rapid change.
