- Abstract
- The Fall 2011 issue of AEMS News and Reviews focuses on contemporary and historical experiences in China through three powerful films. "Though I Am Gone" recounts the shocking death of a Beijing school principal during the Cultural Revolution, capturing the early brutality of student-led violence. "Children of Hangzhou" offers an intimate, bilingual introduction to modern Chinese youth, following four teenagers as they navigate school, family, and tradition in an urban setting. "The Water Cries" explores China’s escalating environmental crises as a consequence of its rapid industrial growth, while also highlighting government efforts to address these challenges—offering a more balanced view often missing from international media. Together, these reviews shed light on China’s social history, youth culture, and environmental transformation.
