- Abstract
- The Summer 2012 issue of AEMS News and Reviews explores the complex intersections of identity, propaganda, performance, and migration across East Asia and Latin America through three compelling documentaries. "Making Mao" (China) delves into how propaganda art was instrumental in constructing Mao Zedong's enduring image as both a divine and political figure. "Die for Japan" (Japan) introduces audiences to kamishibai, a form of Japanese street theater that combined traditional storytelling with mass media to influence young minds in wartime. "A Grandpa from Brazil" (Japan/Brazil) follows a 92-year-old Japanese émigré on his annual return from Brazil to Japan, offering a poignant lens on the experiences of Brazilian Nikkeijin and the transnational ties that bind diaspora communities. Together, these films examine how art, memory, and migration shape and reflect cultural and political realities across generations and borders.
