- Abstract
- The Fall 2014 issue of News and Reviews covers three films that address the challenges of living through and beyond crises, focusing on themes of religion and natural catastrophe, democracy and nation rebuilding, and reconciliation and war. Buddhism after the Tsunami explores the roles of Buddhist institutions and monks following the 2011 tsunami in Japan. Afghan Chronicles is set in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban and explores issues of democracy, freedom, gender, and media. Pictures from a Hiroshima Schoolyard traces the history of joyful paintings created by schoolchildren after the Hiroshima bombing, and tells the story of how these artworks became gifts exchanged between Americans and Japanese as symbols of reconciliation.
