- Abstract
- This article presents an in-depth interview with Virgil Magee, then Head of Communications at Golden Veroleum Liberia (GVL), examining the company’s role in Liberia’s development during the Ebola crisis and beyond. Magee outlines how GVL responded to the epidemic by supporting employees, partner communities, and county authorities through awareness campaigns, donations, and participation in the Ebola Private Sector Mobilization Group. The discussion highlights GVL’s long-term commitment to Liberia through sustainable palm oil cultivation, community engagement, smallholder development programs, and corporate social responsibility initiatives, including schools, scholarships, and infrastructure projects. Magee addresses past criticisms of land acquisition by emphasizing improved communication strategies and community consent mechanisms. Environmental concerns are also discussed, with GVL’s Forest Conservation Policy and adherence to non-deforestation practices aligning with Liberia’s pledge to halt deforestation. Ultimately, the article positions GVL as both a private-sector partner in national recovery and a proponent of sustainable development, aiming to balance economic growth, environmental conservation, and community welfare in one of Africa’s most resource-dependent states.
