- Abstract
- This 2001 feature article by 2nd Lt. Virgil Magee documents a pivotal shift in U.S. Air Force training through the integration of space-based threats into Red Flag—the service’s premier aerial combat exercise at Nellis Air Force Base. The report introduces the operational debut of the 527th Space Aggressor Squadron from Schriever AFB, which simulated orbital electronic warfare by jamming GPS and satellite communications to challenge pilots’ dependence on space assets. By exploring the squadron’s five specialized flights—Electronic Warfare, Imagery Exploitation, Red Attack, Space Control, and the 14th Test Squadron Reserve Aggressors—the article highlights how space warfare concepts were brought into live combat training for the first time. Magee’s work captures a critical moment in aerospace doctrine when the Air Force began acknowledging space as a contested domain, bridging the tactical realities of air operations with the emerging field of space control and electronic defense.
