The Illinois Water Inventory Program (IWIP) was established in 1979 as a centralized repository for historic data on water use in the State. All users of high-capacity groundwater wells and surface water intakes are asked to provide their annual water withdrawals. Water supply planning in Illinois relies on IWIP’s water withdrawal data to assess withdrawal rates, locations, and purposes. The collected data not only provides a comprehensive picture of
statewide water use but is also essential for making informed projections of future water demands and availability.
