Abstract
There is significantly less bespoke repertoire for the piccolo than there is for the flute. To expand the repertoire, performers often transcribe for the piccolo, adapting music originally written for the flute and other instruments. However, an extensive review of current repertoire
for piccolo and piano reveals that marginalized composers were scarcely represented in publications prior to the 21st century. This study primarily seeks to raise awareness of the music of six trailblazing composers through creating new transcriptions for piccolo and piano. This thesis includes information regarding the selected composers and their music, framed with historical context. It also includes insights into the transcription process with drafted excerpts
that could inform future transcriptions. The transcription collection will be published separately by Theodore Presser Company.
The original instrumentation of the transcribed works includes music composed for the organ, piano, violin, and voice. The composers and repertoire selected for transcription are Florence B. Price, Adoration; Teresa Carreño, Le Printemps, Op. 25; Kōda Nobu (幸田延),
Sonate in D-Moll für Violine und Klavier; Dora Pejačević, Sonate in D-Dur für Violine und
Klavier, Op. 26, Mvt. III; Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, “Schwanenlied” and “Gondellied” from
Sechs Lieder für eine Stimme mit Begleitung des Pianoforte, Op. 1; and Eva Dell’Acqua, Villanelle. While the musical selections are varied and reflect each composer’s distinct
compositional language and background, they collectively embody the essence of Romanticism through the lyrical melodies and expressive harmonies.
