Abstract
In the digital era, the stage is no longer confined to physical venues. Performers now embrace multiple stages, both offline and online, where vocal performance, literary interpretation, and digital storytelling intersect. This thesis argues that digital prototyping can extend the expressive
possibilities of art song by reframing the vocal performer’s role as not only singer, but also a hybrid of dramaturg, designer, and independent creative producer.
This essay focuses on the first piece “Ru Meng Ling” from Wang, Jianzhong’s Five Chinese Art Songs on the poetry of Li Qingzhao. It adopts a practice-as-research (PaR) framework to integrate narrative reconstruction, digital prototyping, and vocal performance practice.
It proposes a ten-step iterative workflow that incorporates prompt engineering with AI-powered tools to generate the digital prototype. The prototype transforms the intersection of poetic imagery and literary interpretation into dramaturgical anchors for performance design.
The rapid evolution of AI technologies has lowered the threshold for creative production yet also demands literacies and critical awareness from creatives. This study argues that integrating digital prototyping can deepen poetic interpretation, enhance performers’ artistic understanding, and open new pedagogical and artistic pathways for art song performance in the 21st century. It
contributes both a creative methodological framework and a critical reflection on how performers can actively shape digital narratives in contemporary vocal performance.
