Abstract
This thesis examines the pedagogical techniques of jazz saxophonist Ben Wendel, offering insight into how his creative process unfolds in both improvisation and composition. It explores the systematic organization and exercises Wendel employs in his teaching and personal practice to foster artistic expression, alongside his broader philosophical approach to music-making. Supplementing
the thesis are twelve case studies and a full interview transcription, both of which serve to contextualize and support Wendel’s approach to cultivating creativity and advancing the jazz artform.
