Abstract
During the American Civil War, the Confederate States employed ten cruisers to prey upon United States merchant ships. Some of them converted captured vessels as tenders to that ship. The raider, CSS Florida, armed one of her captures and used it as a raider to attack U. S. merchant ships. CSS Florida captured the brig, Clarence, off eastern most Brazil on May 6, 1863. Florida’s commander, Lieutenant John N. Maitt, armed her with a howitzer and put aboard a crew, under command of Lieutenant Charles W. Read. Lt Read was told to attack Union shipping along the northeastern American coast. When Clarence captured the bark, Tacony, off Cape Henry the 12th, Lt Reid saw she was better equipped to serve as a raider. He, therefore, transferred Clarence’s crew and all necessary armament and supplies to Tacony. Clarence was then burned. On June 26th Lt Read switched to another vessel Tacony had captured, the schooner, Archer. This account describes the attempt of the Union Navy to capture or destroy these raiders.
