- Abstract
- Caroline and I walked through the woods at the edge of her farm in central Sweden. She calls this treasure of spruce, pine, blueberries and moss “trollskogen” (the troll forest). International agreements focus on carbon sequestration and biodiversity of forests. And yet, right here in these delight-full woods in Örebro (as in every woods—or prairie—in every part of the world), these discussions feel far away. Only the wind and the woodpeckers (and perhaps the trolls) are part of the discourse. In my research, I am developing scenarios that portray different views of a landscape—in the past, present and future—to help achieve climate and conservation goals. I can use software, samples and mathematical equations to estimate some of the benefits of these landscapes; I can read the policies and tally the jargon to understand the politics. But how do I model the immeasurable—this landscape as seen through the eyes of those who live here?
