- Abstract
- Digital Artivism is the merging between art & activism in digital spaces, it is identity & community exploration through arts. My digital mural asks, how are Indigenous, Chicana, & Latina (ICL) digital productions a liberatory form of expression, a socio-political act of resistance, &/or a pleasurable way of challenging the matrix of domination (racism, sexism, colonialism, etc.)? Embodying ICL cultura & digital graffiti, my mural is composed of cut-out pictures of flowers & land & my own socio-political pins, stickers, books, & artifacts. Murals in general engage in “hometactics” (Mariana Ortega, 2016), they share history, speak our truths, create community, are part of our cultura/barrio, they resist displacement, gentrification, etc. Hence, digital murals are a critical & creative method of resistance for ICL womxn/communities as they create agency. Sandoval & Latorre (2008) assert that digital artivism advances a mode of liberatory consciousness since it falls between the intersections of creative expression, social activism, & self-empowerment. Digital artivism can also be joyful helping communities engage in activism without reliving traumatic pasts. As a communication & media scholar, I continuously focus on the ways ICL content creators use digital productions on social media sites to promote their own culture, community, & self!
