Abstract

The art exhibit created by Latina middle school youth in Urbana that will be showcased later this spring titled "Latinx Creacciónes" (Latinx Creations) at the Krannert Art Museum was only possible with the spatial and communal visions these girls planted and cultivated during their afterschool program. The image submitted was a part of a group activity where we posed questions to the girls so they could envision what a fulfilling after school museum curation program would look like. This particular question elicited dynamically powerful and creative responses from the girls using their entire linguistic repertoires, identities, names (covered), desires, experiences, humor, and emotions. When asked what they want to feel while in the space together they each contributed with different answers that directly spoke to their wanted emotions and even bent the question with responses consisting of what they did not want to experience. Most important about this image and our research is the importance of youth centered projects to be grounded in the youth themselves: that their voices and agency aren’t silenced in the process of program implementation, and that they are able to sow their very own seeded ideas.
