- Abstract
- We slowly navigated our boat through the meandering waters of the inlet to Wild Rice Lake. As we floated through the clearings of wild rice, careful not damage this valuable cultural resource, I felt at peace in the beauty of undisturbed nature. Bathed in the sounds of the quiet whir of the motor and frogs croaking, I sat still, cross-legged at the front of the boat, absorbing my innate human connection to nature. In that moment, I felt gratitude for doing exactly what I was meant to do, protecting our natural resources and environment through scientific research. My master’s thesis research revolves around using environmental DNA sampling for the detection of aquatic invasive species. However, on this particular trip I was assisting my advisor with conducting sampling of the invasive rusty crayfish through trapping. This research trip gave me the opportunity to directly interact with one of my study organisms, gain aquatic field work and boating experience, and foster a deeper personal connection to nature and the impact of my research.
