- Abstract
- Recently, a fundamentally new approach to building ultra-low frequency (ULF) transmitters with permanent magnets has been developed, commonly referred to as magneto-mechanical transmitters (MMT). In an MMT, the magnetic field carrier signal is generated through the oscillation of permanent magnets. An MMT consists of a drive coil plus a magneto-mechanical resonator array (MMRA). As shown in the figure, the external voltage across the coil induces a current flowing through the coil; this current produces an alternating magnetic field, which in turn generates an alternating torque on the rotor magnet, which actuates the oscillatory motion of the MMT’s rotor magnet. A vector magnetic field sensor will detect the magnetic field generated by the permanent magnet rotors, and data can be encoded using amplitude modulation (AM). The red field lines in the figure represent the magnetic field generated by the permanent magnet rotors, and the yellow field lines represent the magnetic field generated by the coil.
