- Abstract
- A place is built on the foundation of historical roots, economics, politics and ideologies. With highly racially diverse demographics, it becomes challenging to maintain equilibrium. A city standing tall on these pillars forgets to preserve peace because of racial segregation that has been persistent in American cities. As city planners, we have a responsibility to make an equitable future where all the sectors- transportation, environment, economic and affordable housing are developed for all social and racial classes to give them opportunities to grow. New York is one of the highest segregated places in the US. The picture shows different areas of the city having unique storylines of the residents depending on their available resources and location. Yinyang is a Chinese philosophical concept that shows the interconnectedness between two opposite forces. This concept can be implied here for the planners to make “opportunity zones” not based on location, in order to combine the opposite forces to promote equality within the cities.
