- Abstract
- Lineage and line are concepts I ponder as I commute nearly three hours across rural Illinois for my DMA in jazz performance. My car is my sound booth, spinning recordings, interviews, podcasts, and duets with my radio. This studio session records my thoughts about my ongoing dissertation research on the lineages of women, nonbinary, transgender, and LGBTQ+ jazz musicians. Now’s the Time is a landmark album featuring jazz icons Marian McPartland, Mary Osborne, Lynn Milano, Dottie Dodgion, and Vi Redd. This 1977 collaboration pays homage to Kansas City blues and Charlie Parker, who composed and recorded “Now’s the Time” in 1945. Now’s the Time ignited my drive to learn from and teach about the lineage of musicians like saxophonist Vi Redd, who led her own band and recorded the albums Bird Call (1962) and Lady Soul (1963).Genius is found in musicians of every gender and sexuality. My research and solo transcriptions strive for representation in jazz studies, broadening the narrow rendering of jazz history as an all-male space. My image depicts a collaboration across decades with artists who inspire me. It has been true in 1962, 1963, 1977, and 2023: Now has always been the time.
